Heads Up: News Roundup and How Can We Power the AI Buildout?
In this week’s Heads UP, Tech TV hosts Bill Mew and Pete Warren discuss:
1) News Round Up: Disengagement Ring
Amazon’s smart doorbell company is dropping a partnership with a firm known for its surveillance services, after facing scrutiny over its privacy practices. Keir Starmer has pledged to respond more quickly to close loopholes in laws designed to protect children online. After a recent win aganst X and its AI assistant Grok over the creation of non-consensual sexual deepfakes, the UK government is now focusing on “all AI bots”.
2) Power Politics
Activists are alarmed at the US president’s destructive policies which threaten to enrich fossil fuel billionaires, while endangering the planet. Meanwhile Beijing has bet big on the green transition. What can or should other countries be doing? And to what extent will the data centre build out to support the AI arms race compound the problem? Is there a better way or are we powerless to stop them?
3) Top Level Domains Up for Grabs
Anguilla, a small country with a population of just 16,000, earned $39 million in 2024 from selling .AI domain names. A new application round in Aporil will opn up a host of new generic top-level domain (gTLD) registries. You could own one, but with more than 1,200 gTLDs competing for attention, succeeding in getting a good return is far from guaranteed.
